On Christmas Eve December 24, 2009 at 1316 hours,
Company 14 was dispatched to assist 21 (Topton) on a
dwelling fire on Pilgert Road in Longswamp Township. On the
initial alarm was 21, 39, 14, and Lehigh 1. Shortly
thereafter 35, 46, and 20 were dispatched for tankers.
Within minutes requests were made for the response of 46
for the full company, Engine 35 and Brush 20. Engine 14 set up a tanker fill site,
Tanker 14 joined the tanker force and Rescue 14 provided
manpower and equipment. The home sustained heavy damage.
Company 14 returned by 1700 hours. |

 On
Tuesday December 15, 2009 at 1328 hours, Companies 14
and 19 were dispatched as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) to
assist Boyertown with an incident of a car into the
Boyertown Inn at Philadelphia and Reading Avenues. The
Rescue and Engine set up RIT along with firefighters from
19, and fortunately were not needed. Departments
specializing in building collapse ( i.e.: Pottstown, Spring
Twp, and Exeter) were dispatched to the scene, in addition
to many other local departments for personnel to perform the
very labor intensive work needed. A support beam buried
within the exterior wall was bent in the crash and a
possible structural collapse was feared. Utilities had to be
disconnected, and the building shored up both inside and
out,  before the car could be removed. The vehicle was
finally taken
out around 1740 hours and units were released from the scene
and back at station by 1830 hours. |

On
Tuesday December 1, 2009 at 1832 hours,
Company 14 was
dispatched as part of the second alarm assignment, to assist
Company 21 on a working sawmill fire. County dispatch had
received multiple calls that Solt Saw Mill at 33 Park Ave.,
off of State Street in Longswamp Township, was on fire.
Topton Fire Officers quickly had county hit out the second
alarm, and then additional ones for tankers and
firefighters. Bally's Engine, Tanker, and Rescue all
responded. Manpower assisted at the scene for the initial
attack, then when the fire was under control, Engine and
Rescue stood-by at 21's station along with Engine 20. Tanker
remained in the water shuttle for another hour. All Company
14 units returned by 23:20 hours. |

On
Sunday November 22, 2009 at 1849 hours,
Company 14 was
dispatched
to assist Montgomery 67 with a structure fire on Harvest
Drive in Douglass Township. Fire on the exterior extending
to the soffit. Engine and Tanker responded. A neighbor saved
the unit from major damage by using a garden hose to
knockdown the bulk of the fire before it extended into the
home. Fire crews from the two companies completed
extinguishment, and checked for extension. Company 14 was
back at station within the hour. |

 Thursday
November 5, 2009 at 1445 hours, Companies 22, 20, 14, Ladder 15,
and EMS 505 were dispatched to Weinsteiger Road in
Washington Township for a structure fire. Heavy smoke
was visible three miles away in Bally as the first
Bally units responded. Arriving 20 units found heavy fire and
immediately went into fire
 suppression. Because
of the rapid spread of the fire travelling up to the
attic and across to the other side, crews were pulled
out and an exterior attack was ordered. A second alarm
was sounded bringing in 58, 17, 16, and 19. Additionally,
the Southeast Berks Tanker Task Force was dispatched for
water, and Boyertown Salvation Army Canteen was on scene
for hydration and nourishment.  Damage was extensive to the dwelling and
contents, including a 1925 Model T. Engine 14, Tanker 14, Tanker 14-1, and Rescue
14 all
responded on this mutual aid assist to Barto. A pet cat
was still being sought when Company 14 returned to station
at 1920 hours. The only other casualty was the deer struck by Engine 14 as it
returned to quarters.

 Saturday
October 31 at 1559 hours, Company 22, Rescue 14 and EMS
525 (covering for 505) were dispatched to Dale Road in
Washington Township for an accident with unknown injuries.
It was reported that the vehicle was on its side and
an occupant was attempting to self-extricate. Driver was out
when crews arrived. Crews took care of hazards and fluids
and waited for PSP. Back at station by 1730 hours. |

 On
Sunday October 18 at 1649 hours, Companies 20, 22, 14,
39, 19, 21, Montgomery 65 for RIT, and EMS 505 were
dispatched to the 200 block of Merkel Road in District
Township for a working garage fire. Arriving 20 officers
confirmed a working fire, and added that there was an
exposure of a large camper
 parked
immediately adjacent to the garage. Engine, Tanker and
Rescue 14 responded from Bally to this remote location.
Engine 20 arrived and pulled a pre-connect to attack the
fire. Water was supplied by Tankers 22 and 14. Manpower was
assigned to a manpower pool as the fire was knocked down and
then overhauled. The contents of the garage, including a
vehicle, were destroyed. The company was back at station by
1830 hours. |

 On
Saturday October 10 at 1732 hours, as firefighters were
assembled to go to a banquet in their honor, Companies 14,
22 and Fire Police from 20 were dispatched to North Front
Street in the Borough for a vehicle fire with exposures.
Assistant 14 arrived on location and confirmed a working
truck fire. Engine 14 arrived a pulled two pre-connects.
Tanker 14 supplied the Engine, and Engine 22 pulled a third
line upon its arrival. The fire was knocked down and
overhauled, and the company returned the apparatus to
service before heading down the street to the banquet. .

Wednesday October 7 at 1038 hours,
Companies
22, 20, 14, EMS 505 & 525, and PSP were dispatched to Route
100 near Stauffer Road for an accident with possible
entrapment. Crews arrived to find multiple vehicles
involved. EMS 332 was added to the assignment. Rescue 14
responded and along along with 22, popped a door for EMS, assisted with
patient care and controlled hazards and fluids. Retuned to
station within an hour. |

 Saturday
October 3 at 1620 hours, Company 22, Rescue 14, EMS 505
& 525, along with PSP were dispatched to Hoffmansville and
County Line Roads in Washington Twp for an accident with
injuries. The rescue had a crew has station from the 85th
Anniversary celebrations earlier in the afternoon and
responded to assist with controlling hazards, fluids and
patient care. Company available within 45 minutes. |

 Saturday
October 3 at 0258 hours, Companies 58, 39, Rescue 14,
EMS 505 and 525 and PSP were dispatched for an accident with
unknown injuries - a vehicle against a tree - at Huff's
Church and Captain Wolfe Roads in Hereford Township.
As Deputy 58 went responding he was given additional
information concerning possible injuries. Upon arrival he
found a car with major driver side intrusion and heavy
entrapment. The assignment was upgraded to a rescue box and MedEvac was placed on standby. Rescue 14 and Engine 14 both
responded to the scene. Engine 39 was assigned to set
up a landing zone for air medical.

Upon arrival, Engine 58 went into rescue service, followed shortly
thereafter by Rescue 14, in order to remove the roof and
roll the dash. The evolution was extremely complicated due
to the position of the car and driver, as well as the damage
to the vehicle. Every piece of hydraulic equipment carried
on Rescue 14, as well as Engine 58, was placed into service,
including Jaws, O-Cutters, Maverick, and all sizes of Rams.
EMS began treatment while the extrication proceeded. When
freed, the patient was transported to a local trauma center.
Companies were available by 0500 hours. |

Saturday
Sept 26 / Sunday Sept 27
At 2251 hours on Saturday night, Company 22, Rescue
14, Fire Police from 20, EMS 505 and 525 and PSP were dispatched for an accident
with entrapment at Route 100 and Niantic Roads in Washington
Twp. Further information supplied indicated car versus
tractor trailer with the car's drivers confined but not
entrapped. EMS and Chief 22 arrived and informed incoming
units that the tractor trailer was no longer on scene and
the patient had self extricated. Crews controlled traffic
and hazards, waiting for PSP and tow company. Back at
station by 00:01 Sunday. Crews had a chance to get two hours
sleep, when...
 At
0224 hours on Sunday morning, Companies 14, 22, Fire
Police from 20, EMS 505, 525 and PSP were dispatched to the
500 block of Main Street in Bally Borough for an vehicle
into a pole. EMS arriving quickly on the scene one block
from the ambulance and fire station, discovered a scene with
a pole sheared off at the base, but driver and passengers no
longer on scene. Met-Ed responded and determined that although
sheared, the replacement of the pole could wait until Monday
during daylight and no rain.
Vehicle was loaded on tow, scene cleaned and company back at
station at 0349 hours. |

Monday September 21 at 0459 hours, Companies 58, 39
and Rescue 14 were dispatched along with EMS 505 and PSP for an
accident -unknown injuries involving two tractor trailers on
Rt 100 in Hereford Township, south of Rt 29. As Chief 58
responded he was given additional information concerning
injuries to one of the occupants. Rescue 14 responded and
provided lighting and manpower on the south side of the
incident which closed Rt 100 entirely. Chief 58 ordered
additional fire police dispatched from Berks and Montgomery
Counties to close intersections around the accident scene. After
the patient was
packaged and PSP arrived, 14's crew was released and returned by
0600. |

Monday
September 14 at 1720 hours, Companies 22, 14 and
20, along with EMS 505 and 525 were dispatched to Crow Hill
Road in Washington Township for the report of a lawn tractor
accident with entrapment. Additional was given that the
patient's legs were pinned under an overturned tractor.
Rescue 14 responded and while enroute, Assistant 14-1
arrived and reported that the victim had been extricated.
Crews arrived on location on a hill side and assisted EMS
with removing the patient down the slope and into the
ambulance. Company back at station within 25 minutes. |

 Sunday
September 13 at 0140 hours, Companies 22, 14, 20 and
Ladder 15 along with EMS 505 were dispatched to Gehman Road
in Washington Township for a structure fire reported to be a
dryer inside the dwelling. Assistant 14-1 arrived and
confirmed dryer fire with smoke throughout home.
 Crews
arrived and removed dryer to outside, where fire was
extinguished with hand extinguishers and a line pulled from
Engine 14.
Walls and ceiling
were checked for extension.
Home was ventilated through a combination of
both positive and negative pressure smoke ejectors. Company
14 returned to station by 0300 hours. |

Friday
September 11 at 2233 hours
Companies 22, Rescue 14 and FP 20, along with EMS 505 and
525 were dispatched for an accident with injuries involving
on overturning vehicle on Barto Rd near Rt 100 in Washington
Twp. On this rainy night, crews found car on its roof with
patient nearby. Fire personnel assisted EMS in packaging
patient for transport and returned within an hour. |

August is Chicken Barbeque time in Bally, and
August15th saw our unsurpassed crew hard at work cooking over
1300 meals. But since we do more than cook chicken, the
month saw: three MVA's in Washington; three in Hereford, a
pump detail in Bally, a MedEvac flight in Douglass (Montgomery County),
a pedestrian accident in District, and medical assists in
Bally, Washington, Hereford and District Townships. The
exhaust ventilation system was completed inside the engine
room and is now functioning to remove toxic gases. |

Friday July 10, 2009 at 0010 hours, Tanker 14 was
dispatched to assist on a multiple alarm fire in Oley
Township involving a number of buildings at a large horse
farm on Oley Turnpike Road. Most of the animals were in
pasture, but a few received burns. The tanker was in service
shuttling water until it was released and returned to
station at 0319. Other July Responses included July 1
- an MVA in Washington Twp and an AFA in Bally. July 3 was an assist to
Gilbertsville for a car fire in Douglass Twp at Lone Pine
and Papermill Roads. Engine, Tanker and Utility responded.
An inch and three-quarter was pulled to extinguish the fire
and the crew was back at station in an hour. July 16 our
Fire Police went to Bechtelsville; and on July 19 there was
an AFA in District Twp. The end of the month brought four
responses into Washington Twp: July 20 - an AFA; July 26 a
Medical Assist; on the 29th a call for our Fire Police and
on the 31st we responded to another AFA. |

June was a time that allowed the crew
to take a break from the intensity of calls while preparing
the engine room for repainting, floor sealing, and the
installation of the new exhaust system. Responses included
an MVA in Pike Twp on June 12, and MVA in Bally on June 13,
an request for Fire Police and an AFA both in Washington Twp
on June 17, a Medical Assist in District Twp on June 29 and
another MVA in Bally on June 30. |

MedEvac Training
Seventy-five Emergency Responders from local fire and
ambulance companies attended a training session offered by
Lehigh Valley Hospital MedEvac Flight Paramedic Don Shambo
at Goodwill Fire in Bally. Shambo reviewed goals and
procedures of the Air Medical Service, including its primary
objective of reducing time it takes to get the patient to
definitive care by a trauma surgeon.
 He
reminded participants of the guidelines it takes to fly a
patient, patient triage, landing zone requirements, and
aircraft safety. After an hour of classroom time, one of the
LVH fleet was dispatched to the fire company ballfield for a
hands-on walkthrough by emergency personnel , as well as the
community. In addition to Bally Fire and Bally Ambulance,
among the other departments attending were Barto,
Bechtelsville, New Berlinville, Hereford and Seisholtville
Fire Companies. LVH MedEvac operates four aircraft which are
located in Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, Weatherly and
Pottsville. |

Friday June 5, 2009 at 1809 hours Companies 22
and 14, with Fire Police from 20, along with 505 and Medic
525 were dispatched to Niantic Road and Pine Street in
Washington Township for a Motor Vehicle Accident with
Entrapment. Chief 22 arrived shortly after the dispatch
and confirmed multiple vehicles, with a number of patients
and one trapped with door intrusion. Additional EMS was
dispatched from 332 (Gilbertsville EMS). Crews from 22 and 14
worked to extricate the victim by popping the drivers side
door, removing the roof and taking out the windshield. Crews
were still on scene, when
at 1852 hours 22, 14 and FP20 were dispatched to a second
accident with injuries in the township, this one in the 100
block of Barto Road. Rescue 14 and Brush 22 responded to
that scene, leaving fire police at the first incident. In
this crash a patient was boarded, placed in the back of the
Rescue, and assessed while awaiting for 369 (Upper Perk EMS)
which was dispatched
from Montgomery County to cover. Crews were available from
both scenes shortly after 1930 hours. |

 Memorial
Day May 25, 2009
at 0839 hours Company 14 and Fire
Police from 22 were dispatched for a transformer fire at
Route 100 and Front Streets in the borough. Engine 14
responded, but while enroute, arriving fire
officers discovered that the transformer actually was
located along an outside wall of the Bally Brooke industrial
complex on Front Street and there was possible fire
extension into the large former Bally Case and Cooler
building. The remainder of Company 14, along with Companies 22 and 20 were added to the assignment. Engine 14 arrived, pulled a line and forced entry.
Crews from the three companies laddered the roof, checked for extension on the
interior and exterior using thermal imaging cameras and
secured the scene. After notifying Met-Ed and building
management, all companies took up and returned within an
hour. |

 Thursday
May 14, 2009
at approx 2305 hours Companies 22, 14 and
505 were dispatched to Kulps Roads in Washington Township
for an accident with injuries. Initial reports indicated car
hit a tree. Arriving units found that during a just passed
thunderstorm the tree in question had fallen across the
roadway at a height of about four feet. The vehicle impacted
the tree across the windshield sending glass flying into the
car. Patient was treated at scene by EMS. Fire crews cut up
and removed 13" diameter tree from roadway, waited for PSP
and tow company and cleared the scene an hour later. |

Sunday May 3, 2009 - Two responses: First was
at 1154 hours when 14 and 22 were sent to North Church
Street in the borough for a camper fire. Engine 22 arrived
and pulled a line to extinguish a camper built for the back
of a pick-up truck. Both companies back in service a short
time later. Second was that evening at 1729 hours
when 22, 14, 505 and PSP were sent to County Line and
Gehringer Roads in Washington Township for a motor vehicle
accident with injuries. Responding units arrived to find
vehicle had taken out one pole and tension from wires had
snapped a second pole and produced power outage. Outage area
was reduced by power company until full service restored the
next morning. Company 14 was back at station within an hour,
but fire police were on scene for four hours until flaggers
from Met-Ed took over the scene. |

Saturday
May 2, 2009 - Companies 22, 14, 505, 525 and PSP
were dispatched at 0159 hours to an accident with injuries.
Original location was given as Dale and Forgedale Roads in
Washington Twp; crash scene with a male lying in the roadway
was found to be at Dale and Dairy Lanes just over the line
into Hereford Twp . A MedEvac helicopter was placed on
stand-by, but not used. Crews assisted in packaging patient
and waited in heavy rain for PSP and tow company. Back at
station by 0315 hours. |

Thursday
April 30, 2009 - Companies 22, 14, 505, 525 and
PSP were dispatched at 1646 hours to an accident with
injuries and possible entrapment at Rt 100 and Dairy Lane.
Chief 22 arrived and reported that mother and children had
been removed from a van on it's side. Crews assisted with
patient care and hazard control and waited for Berks-Mont
Towing to removed van. Available from scene at 1814 hours. |

Monday
April 20th, Eddinger Propane Gas
Inc. sponsored another in a series of Propane Safety
Classes led by Dan Waters of Premier Safety Services.
Almost 100 personnel from more than a dozen local
fire and ambulance crews were taught basics of
gases, safety measures to take and reviewed recent
incidents across the country including one in Ghent,
WV which claimed four lives.

 Tuesday
April 7, 2009 - Companies 22 and 14, Fire Police from
20, 505 and PSP were dispatched at 1509 hours to an accident
with possible entrapment on Route 100 in Washington Twp,
near Jake's Flea Market. Assistant 14-1 arrived to find two
vehicles on opposite sides of Route 100 on opposite sides of
the bridge spanning the Perkiomen Creek. The Assistant
reported that there was negative entrapment, but debris and
traffic hazards along this heavily travelled roadway. The
rescue responded and assisted with patient evaluation,
debris removal and traffic control. They were released and
back at station within an hour. |

 Friday
March 27, 2009 - DUI Lighting
Chief 14 had been
contacted by PSP during the week and the department was
requested to provide lighting at the northern edge of the
Borough for a DUI check point from 10pm Friday until 2pm
Saturday morning. Rescue 14 and crew reported and used the
two rear mounted light towers, as well as side lighting to
illuminate the street. The crew stood-by until released
early Saturday morning. |

 Monday
March 23, 2009 - Brush Fires
1148 hours: 39, 14 and 20 dispatched to Treichler Rd
in District Township for a brush fire near the village of
Landis Store. First fire officers on scene confirmed a
rapidly moving brush fire involving woods and approaching
structures. Second alarm was added bringing 22, 21, 35.
Lehigh 1 was due, but already at working structure in
Macungie. Crew worked for 90 minutes to contain and
extinguish the brush. 21 went available and was dispatched
to Macungie. 1548 hours - 22 and 14 were
dispatched to Hillcrest Road in Washington Township for
report of smoke, possible brush fire. Fire officers found
woods fire. Contained within an hour. While enroute,
Chief 22 was notified of a residential AFA less than a
quarter mile away. 20 checked and cleared that call. Alarm
activated due to a local power outage. |

 Saturday
March 14, 2009 - At 1448 hours, Company 14 was
dispatched with 39 and 20 for a barn fire on Chew Road near
Forgedale. Smoke was visible miles away on Route 100. Chief
39 arrived and confirmed a working structure fire with
extension into nearby brush. He added 22, 17, 58, and 21.
Engines 39-2 and 20 went down the drive, followed by Tanker
14, while Engine 14 set up a tanker dump site at Forgedale
and Chew using porta-ponds from 22 and 58. Crews were
hampered by the metal siding and roof which had collapsed
into the rubble and to be removed to extinguish the fire.
Fuel being stored in both 275 gallon tanks and 55 gallon drums added
additional hazards. EMS and rehab services were provided by
505, 525, and 332. Company 14 returned to station at 1737
hours. |

Monday
March 2, 2009 - Approx 0845 hours, Rescue 14 was
dispatched at the request of Chief 505, when he arrived at
the scene of a motor vehicle accident in Washington Township
in front of Passmore Service Center. Two vehicles had
collided on snow covered roads, with one driver confined. 22
and 20 had been on the original dispatch and when rescue
arrived they had released the door. Crew assisted with
boarding and packaging of one driver and both patients and
were available by 0930. An additional non-injury accident
was reported around the same time on Lenape Road. Later in
the afternoon the Rescue was dispatched for an injury
accident in Seisholtsville but was recalled enroute. Fire
police from the company also responded to the Hamburg area
to assist in the closing of Interstate 78 due to multiple
accidents on that roadway during the wintry weather. |

Sunday March 1, 2009 - Company
14 was dispatched at 0442 hours to respond with Engine 14 and
Tanker 14 to assist Montgomery County companies on a
possible structure fire on Schwoyer Road in Upper Hanover
Township. Montgomery
County fire officers arrived to find a 2 1/2 story single
family dwelling with heavy fire. Additional tankers were
requested, along with RIT, EMS and eventually canteen
service. Tanker 14 dropped its porta-pond and Engine 14 set
up a draft to supply Engine 65. A fill site was
established at a pond on Kutztown Road near County Line
Road. The company returned to station by 0813 hours. Units
on scene included:
Montgomery County: 65, 38, Tankers 68, 71 and 87; EMS
369, 328; Canteen 41
Berks County: 14, 58, Tankers 22 and 20; RIT - Ladder

February, 2009 ~ Some Highlights
25th - Dispatched with others at 1138 hrs for brush
fire off of Keim Road in District Township. New owners were
cleaning up to restore property and started brush fire that
spread to an old 1800's abandoned house and barn. Two and a
half acres of brush were involved in addition to the
structure. The problem was gaining access. The only access
was old logging path 1/2 mile in from Keim Rd or from Haas
Rd which stops at washed out road same distance. Keim Road
is narrow and in very poor condition. Eventually crews has
to hand drag hose over 400' from Keim and only got 2 brush
units into the scene via the logging road. Responding were
14, 39, 19, 20, 22, 505, 575, 525 and Lehigh 66. 58 covered
for all. Crews returned to station four hours later.
24th - The rescue was dispatched at 1329 hrs to
Gravel Pike in Hereford Township for an overturned milk
tanker, with wires down and pole snapped.58 fire officers
determined that the rescue was not needed and it was
recalled enroute. Fire Police from 14 (and many other
companies) remained on scene into the evening diverting
traffic during the clean up.
18th - The engine was dispatched at 2004 hrs to
assist Montg 67 on a possible structure fire on Niantic Road
in Douglass Township. Crews searched the home to determined
source of burning odor. Eventually freezer motor was found
to have burnt out. Back at station within an hour.
18th - The rescue was dispatched at 1505 hrs to St.
Peter's Road in Hereford Twp for accident with entrapment,
vehicle overturned on icy roads. Call was over line into
Lehigh County. Their on-scene units recalled the rescue.
11th - The company was dispatched at 1620 hrs to
cover 21 (Topton), while they were out on a multi-alarm
structure fire on Route 222 in Maxatawny Township. At 1651
the cover companies were sent by Berks to an accident at Old
Topton Road and North Park Rd. Crew returned to Bally within
a few hours. |

January
21, 2009 at 0255 hours, Companies 14, 39 and 20, and
Bally EMS were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with
entrapment and fire on Forgedale Road in what was originally
thought to be District Township. Minutes later when it was
determined that the crash was in Washington Township ,
Company 22 was added to the assignment. Additional
information received on response indicated injuries not only
to the driver, but also to a dog which had been in the
pick-up truck. Crews arrived on scene to find a truck into a
tree. On scene were police from PSP-Reading, as well as
Bally, Boyertown and Oley. Patient was packaged and
transported via Bally Ambulance. |

January
10, 2009 at 1745 hours, during wintry weather, Companies
22, 14, Fire Police from 20, EMS 505, and PSP were
dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in Washington
Township on Route 100 across from Jakes Flea Market. Initial
reports indicated a car into a creek. Responders found the
vehicle off the road, down an embankment, coming to rest
just short of the Perkiomen Creek. The crew from the Rescue
assisted in packaging a patient and went available when the
ambulance left for the hospital. |

at 1939 hours, Companies 14, 22, 20, 58, Ladder
15 and Montg 65 were dispatched to the 200 block of South
Church St in Bally for a possible structure fire at a
large industrial bldg. Asst 14-1 arrived to find smoke and
fire on the rear steps from a bucket used to discard
cigarette butts. All units were recalled except Engine &
Tanker 14. Crews used pressurized water extinguishers to
extinguish the blaze, going available in 20 minutes. |
