2000-12-20 Longswamp Fire2000-12-20 Longswamp Fire 2Saturday December 20, 2008 at 6:42pm, Company 14 was dispatched to assist 21 (Topton) on the second alarm for a dwelling fire in Longswamp Township on Adams La off Fairchild Street. In 25 degree weather, Engine 14 and Tanker 14 responded, with the Tanker joining the queue for the tanker shuttle; and the manpower from the Engine sent to the scene to join the manpower pool. After overhaul, the company was release and back at station shortly after 10:00pm.

2008-12-17 Wash Twp MVAWednesday December 17, 2008 at 8:39am, following a night of snow and ice, Companies 22,20, and Rescue 14, along with EMS 505 and 525 were dispatched for an accident with injuries on County Line Road near Wilt Road in Washington Township. Arriving units found a single vehicle had impacted a tree on one side of the road and come to rest in a driveway on the opposite side of the roadway. One adult and two children, who had been in the vehicle, were in a nearby home. Fire crews controlled hazards, and assisted EMS in packaging the adult patient for transport. Company was available by 0930 hours.

Friday December 5, 2006 at 11:58am, Companies 22, 20, 14, and Ladder 15 were dispatched to a structure fire on Hill Church Road in Washington Township Arriving units found fire coming out of the roof of a porch addition containing a wood stove, with no residents at home at the time. Crews went into service, with fire damage being contained to the addition, with smoke throughout the dwelling. Company was back at station by 1340 hours


Fox's Fruit Stand Rt 100Fox's Fruit Stand Rt 100Saturday November 22, 2008 at approx 10:15am Companies 14, 22 and 20, along with EMS 505 and 525 were dispatched to Route 100 near Hoffmansville Road in Washington Township for an MVA. Arriving units discovered a pickup truck had driven over some stacks of pavers and run up onto Fox's Fruit Stand, with collateral damage to the truck in which stand attendants were seated. Vehicle was powered down and company returned to station within 30 minutes.

Saturday November 22, 2008 at 0053 hours in 20 degree weather, Company 14 was dispatched to assist Montg. County Company 38 on a dwelling fire on Township Woods Rd in Upper Hanover Township. 38 Officer arrived to smoke showing and crews went into service in the basement with a pre-connect. Engine 14 and Tanker 14 arrived and were crews assigned a second handline and directed to the first floor. Additional engine companies were requested adding Montg. 65, Berks 58, and Berks 22. Fire was under control, home ventilated and Company 14 returned to station in two hours.
This was the sixth of seven alarms in less than three days, beginning with smoke in a dwelling in Bally at 0316 hours on Thursday, an MVA in Seisholtsville, an AFA in Washington Twp, an MVA in Pike Township and extrication of an injured hunter from the woods in Hereford. See above for number seven.

Saturday November 8, 2008 at 1254 hours, Company 14 was requested by Chief 58 to respond with the Rescue to assist with an motor vehicle accident on Route 100 in Hereford Township. A car had run into the stone pillar next to the driveway of Kingdom Hall and had come to rest on its side. Chief 58 reported that one occupant had self-extricated, but that the other one was still inside the car which was on its side. The Rescue responded and its crew assisted 58 with manpower removing the roof, as well as stabilizing the bottom of the car with rescue struts and a chain come-along. The company was in service for less than an hour and returned to station.


Thursday September 18, 2008  at 0844 hours, Company 14 was dispatched to assist 67 (Gilbertsville) and Ladder 65 (Pennsburg) on a kitchen fire in the 200 block of Niantic Road in the village of Niantic. Engine 14, Tanker 14 and Rescue 14 responded and were told of smoke showing. Gilbertsville fire officer on the scene requested an additional engine from 65, plus an engine from Berks 15 (Boyertown.) Engine and Tanker arrived to flames rolling across the ceiling of the kitchen. Crews went into service with an inch and three-quarter line from Engine 14 and knocked down the fire. Ladder 65 arrived and began ventilation and checking for extension. Fire was contained to the kitchen but the rest of the dwelling sustained smoke damage. Two pet birds were rescued. The company was in service for 90 minutes and returned to station by 1015 hours.


Sunday September 14, 2007  At 1614 hours, companies 14, 22 and FP20, along with EMS 505 and Bally Police were dispatched to the 500 block of Main Street in Bally for an MVA. Rescue 14, Engine 14 and Brush 22 responded. Assistant 14-1 arrived to find a one vehicle crash with a four foot section taken out of a utility pole by a minivan which came to rest on the sidewalk. The driver of the vehicle was transported to LVH-CC for treatment. A child in the vehicle was examined on scene. The vehicle was powered down by fire personnel and Route 100 was closed from Fourth to Seventh Streets until wreckage was cleared by Berks Mont Towing and roadway reopened at 1730 hours.


Scouts Visit Fire Station for Patriot Day Observance
Webelos Pack 291 from Sassamansville made a thank you visit to Goodwill Fire Company in Bally on Monday September 8, 2008 as part of its observance of scouting's Patriot Day Observance in commemoration of the September 11th attacks. Under the leadership of Tom Greaser the Webelos Den Leader, the scouts made cards and brought baked good treats to thank the fire fighters of Bally Berks Station 14. The visit was made on Monday because that's the night the Bally firefighters train and work at their engine room. Others scouts from the Pack will visit Gilbertsville and New Hanover fire stations on Thursday September 11th. Scouts from across the country are saying thank you to emergency responders in their neighborhoods. Scouts will also be helping to lead flag ceremonies and the Pledge of Allegiance at their schools that day. Members of the den visiting the station were John Greaser, Ryan Hartman, Nathaniel Hoffman, Thomas Burkhardt, Sam Duffy and Sage Mutter. Ryan McMaster was unable to be present. All are pictured in the attached photo along with Webelos Den Leader Tom Greaser and Assistant Fire Chief Michael Mutter.

Tuesday September 2, 2008 - At 15:56 hours, tankers from companies 14, 20, 22, and 17 were requested by Gilbertsville Fire Company to respond to assist companies from Montgomery and Berks County on location at a working barn fire on Hoffmansville Road, near Green Hill Road, in Douglass Township Montgomery County. Tankers 14 and 14-1 responded for water; additionally Engine 14 and Rescue 14 responded with manpower. The tankers joined the tanker shuttle and manpower was added to the manpower pool to assist with overhaul of the small barn. All units were back at station by 1830 hours.

Friday  August 18, 2008 - At 1635 hours, companies 14, 22 and FP20, along with EMS 505 were dispatched to Main and Fourth in the Borough of Bally for an MVA. Rescue 14 and Brush 22 responded. Assistant 14-1 arrived to find a two vehicle crash with debris in roadway. Route 100 was closed from Second to Seventh Streets with the additional assistance of fire police from 58 and 17. EMS transported one from the scene. Company 14 remained in service until wreckage was cleared and roadway reopened an hour later.

Thursday August 21, 2008  At approx 1700 hours, Chief 22 requested Rescue 14 and Engine 22 to report to a home on Gehman Road in Washington Township to assist with a partial structure collapse. A vehicle in a private driveway had struck the corner of a garage and the chief wanted to secure the structure and allow the home owner to remove a second vehicle inside the garage. After Berks-Mont Towing removed the first vehicle, the companies shored up the roof, removed debris, and removed the wooden garage door for the owner. As this scene was being finalized, County Dispatch notified the companies of a motorcycle accident on County Line Road near Wilt Road. Company 20 was sent, along with EMS. After securing the structure collapse scene, both companies responded to the second MVA. The rescue was recalled enroute and the company returned to station..


Monday August 18, 2008 - At 1624 hours, companies 22 and 14, with EMS 505 were dispatched to Pine Street in Washington Township for an MVA. Rescue 14 and Brush 22 responded on the fire side. Arriving units found a single vehicle crash with sedan off the side of the road and into a drainage ditch. Vehicle occupants had self extricated. With no service required, the rescue returned to station, leaving 22 to await police and tow.


Wednesday August 6, 2008 - At 0209 hours companies 14 and 39, along with EMS 505 were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Baldy Hill Road in District Township. Reports from the dispatch center while enroute indicated a car on its roof. EMS was first on scene and confirmed car on roof with no driver present. The area was checked, no victims found and company 14 went available and returned to station by 0300, with 39 remaining on scene for PSP and tow company.


Tuesday August 5, 2005 - At 1224 hours Company 14 was requested to respond to East Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown to serve as RIT company on a working structure fire with entrapment above the Boyertown Library. Engine and Rescue responded and took up the safety position to intervene if needed. Boyertown and additional crews made entry and knocked down the fire, but an 84 year old woman died in the blaze. Following overhaul RIT service was  released and the company returned to station by 1528.

Tuesday July 29, 2008 10:45pm Bally, Barto and Bechtelsville Fire; Emergency Medical Services from Bally and Boyertown; PA State Police - Reading; and MedEvac were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in Washington Twp (Berks County) on Sycamore Road (a half mile north of Old Route 100). First arriving personnel reported a driver trapped in a vehicle against a tree. The patient was extricated by rescue crews from 14 and 22, while 20 set up a landing site at the ball field in Bally. Rescue crews had to remove a door and the roof of the vehicle to allow medical personnel access to the patient. The patient was transported to the landing site and flown to Lehigh Valley - Cedar Crest. Berks Mont towing clearing the wreckage and crews return to station by 12:45am.

Propane Training for Emergency Responders

On Monday July 14, 2008, a Training Seminar on Propane Emergencies and Safety was held with hands-on education and training at Eddinger Propane and classroom education at the Goodwill Fire Company both in Bally. Eighty-one emergency responders from twelve area fire and ambulance companies attended the session sponsored by Eddinger’s; the fire company; and the Propane Education and Research Council.

The four hour program included:
• Introduction to the uses of propane and places where firefighters may encounter it.
• Tour of Eddinger bulk storage plant as well as the examination of some bobtail and transport trucks, as well as the fire safety systems on all of them.
• An examination of accidents in the propane industry
• Table top learning session about the properties of propane
• Propane equipment demonstration and information on propane education.

The hands on demonstrations were taught by members of the staff of Eddinger Propane including Bally Assistant Chiefs John Mutter and Mike Mutter. The classroom training was presented by Dan Waters of Premier Safety Services.

06-25-2008 At approx 1545 hours Companies 22 and 14, along with EMS 505 and 525 were dispatched to an accident with injuries at Route 100 and Gehringer Road in Washington Township. Arriving units found, in the north bound lanes, a pickup with heavy front end damage  with a ruptured radiator spilling antifreeze into a storm drain; and in the south bound lanes, a compact sedan with severe rear end damage and a ruptured gas tank leaking fuel onto the roadway. EMS personnel treated both drivers, one refusing transport and the other being taken to a local hospital. Fire personnel worked to contain the two fluid leaks and safety the cars until Berks Mont Towing cleared the vehicles and State Police released the scene. Units returned within an hour.

06-20-2008 At 02:39 hours Company 14 was dispatched on the 2nd Alarm for a dwelling fire in the 500 block of Main Street in Pennsburg Borough. Crews on the initial dispatch had arrived to find fire, with a victim trapped on a porch roof in a home in the middle of a row. The second alarm was dispatched for additional manpower and equipment. Initial crews did a rapid knock down of fire, and upon its arrival the crew from Engine 14 was sent to the manpower pool. Within 45 minutes the company was released and returned to station by 04:00 hours.

06-10-2008 At approx. 14:20 hours, companies 14 and 22 were dispatched to County Line Road in Washington Township for a milk tanker overturned, at the intersection with Weinsteiger Road. Lt. 22-2 (Benfield) arrived on location, and reported a 5000 gallon milk tanker on its side and leaking product. The driver of the truck was not injured, but indicated he had a full load. Crews from both companies used booms, oil dry, and screenings to divert the leaking milk off the roadway and into two holding pits dug by township road crews. The milk company brought another tanker to the scene, but was unable to transfer all the product before the leak worsened. Care, Updegrove and Sons Septic brought in their septic truck to pump the milk out of the holding pits.  A PSP DOT Trooper checked the truck and trailer, and Lewis Environmental was called to dispose of the booms, oil dry, and screenings, as well as dig out the gutter.

05-20-08 At 0921 hrs Co's 22, 14, 505 and Medic 525 were dispatched to Rt 100 and Barto Roads for an MVA with injuries, entrapment and fire. Additional was a car versus dump truck with the dump truck on fire. Co 20 was also dispatched to assist per Chief 22. Assistant 14-1 arrived and confirmed two entrapped in the vehicle and the dump truck was on fire but being controlled by by-standers. Personnel stabilized the vehicle and popped drivers side door to do a rapid extrication of the two patients. EMS transported 3 patients to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest, 2 patients were Trauma Codes, and were later pronounced dead at the hospital. Lewis Environmental from Limerick Pa. was called to do diesel fuel clean up in the front yard of the residence. Fire police from Co's 15, 16, 17 and 58 were also dispatched. Co 14 went at station approximately 1300.

04-05-2008   Companies 58, 39, Rescue 14; EMS 505 & 369; and State Police were dispatched at 01:44 to Gravel Pike in Hereford Township for an MVA with vehicle into house. Responding units found that the vehicle's occupants had fled the scene and the home's occupants were not injured but shaken. One of those in the car returned to the scene and was treated for minor injuries. Co 58 secured the house utilities and supported the hole in the house and also assisted EMS with care of the passenger of the car. Co. 14 assisted EMS with evaluation of the 2 elderly homeowners. A commercial firm was called to secure the house and clean up.


03-23-2008 EASTER SUNDAY  Companies 22, 20, 14, EMS 505 and State Police were dispatched at 19:14 hours for a MVA with injuries and entrapment on RT 100 with a cross street of Passmore Road in Washington Twp. A Co. 22 officer came upon the accident and reported a head on crash with 7 injuries and entrapment to Berks radio. Co. 22 and 14 worked on extracting the 1 patient from vehicle #1 - a Chevy Cavalier by removing the driver's door and the roof. Patient was extricated in approx. 15 minutes, packaged and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest by ground. Vehicle #2 was a Ford truck with 6 passengers all self extricated, treated and packaged by EMS from Boyertown and Gilbertsville and Co. 20 firefighters and transported by ground to LVH-CC.  Fire companies assisted in cleaning up the scene and opened the roadway. With 7 patients needing attention everything went well and we all worked well together. Assistant 14-1


02-13-2008 at 3:57AM Co's 14, 22, 20 and Ladder 15 (along with EMS 505 and Montg Co 65 for RIT) were dispatched for a structure fire in the 700 block of Cherry Street in Bally Borough. 14-13 arrived shortly after the dispatch to confirm a working fire in the basement. Two adult residents had been awakened by smoke detectors and fled the house while calling 911. 14-13 rescued one of two cats trapped in the basement. Engine 14 arrived and put an inch and three-quarter hand line into service to attack the fire. Tanker 14 backed up E14, while other arriving crews went into service. A safety line was run and ventilation was effected through basement windows and the use of positive pressure fans. At that point the second cat was found alive and administered oxygen by the 505 crew. The room and contents were destroyed and although the remainder of the house suffered smoke damage, the fire was confined to the room of origin. The home was secured for the owner and all units returned to station within two hours.

01-27-2008 at 19:11 hours Co's 14 and 22 were dispatched, along with 505 and 525 for an accident with injuries and possible ejection at Main and Church in Bally Borough. 14-13 arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed injuries including a Pediatric Class 1, but reported no ejection nor entrapment. Two units from 332 were added to the EMS assignment and MedEvac placed on stand-by. Rescue 14 responded with a full crew and immediately went into service assisting with patient care and containing fluid spill. Engine 22 set up a landing site for MedEvac which was stood down when the most severely injured patient was transport by ground. Some patients were housed in the heated crew compartment of Rescue 14 until additional EMS units arrived. All crews cleared the scene by 20:05.

01-10-2008 at 1438, Co's 58, 14, 39, and 505 were originally dispatched as Rt 100 and 29 in Hereford Twp, 14-13 arrived and reported the accident was in Lehigh County, due to the Berks County units on the road already, all companies proceeded in, and confirmed 4 vehicles involved with one heavily entrapped in his vehicle, patient was entrapped in Chevy Blazer, that was T-Boned by a School Van, van had no students in it. R-14 with a crew of 8 arrived and deployed all of the Hurst Tools to begin extrication. Patient was entrapped by both legs, pt was extricated and care was transferred to EMS and MedEvac, extrication was about 45 minutes.
